The Portuguese "escudo", whose symbol is "$" is a coin of Portugal, on the occasion of the proclamation of the Republic, which replaced the one that was called "Réis". It was the last coin before the euro.

The Portuguese "escudo" was replaced by the euro on 1 January 2002, the day on which the first euro banknotes and coins began to circulate. The conversion rate between escudos and euros was established on 31 December 1998.
