In Portugal, the first postage stamps were sent in 1853, with the effigy of the queen D. Maria II, and stamp of Francisco de Borja Freire. The first stamps, issued on July 1 had a face value of 5 and 25 reis. The next day, the stamp of 100 reis is issued, and on the 22nd of that month the 50 reis stamp is put on sale. Portugal thus becomes the 45th country to adopt the postage stamp.
